KNEAD Farm is located 4 miles east of Stamford in the village of Tallington. KNEAD owner Michael Thurlby’s family have lived, farmed and milled in Tallington for 6 generations.
We are proud of our welfare standards, sustainability and food miles and are currently in the process of registering for Red Tractor status. We can fully trace all our meat through every process, ensuring that it is reared and treated to the best of standards and therefore, when it gets to your plate, it is as tasty as we can possibly make it.
Rearing our livestock is just part of the work on our farm. We are also very keen on the environment and natural wildlife habitats, ensuring we are as green as we possibly can be.
Lambing is big business, but for farmers it’s always a risk. We pick the best rams at market and even use some of our own, chosen and reared from lambs the previous year. We currently have 400 breeding ewes on our farm, producing 800 lambs a year.
Lincoln Red, are one of the oldest of the UK’s Native Breeds of beef cattle, the cows on our farm are our pride and joy! We have 40 breeding cows, producing 40 calves a year, with 5 heifers kept on the farm and the rest used across the KNEAD pubs.
Soil sustainability is hugely important – we only use our own manure to promote grass growth. We do not use any nitrogen or chemicals on our land and we do not spray our grass with herbicides or pesticides but instead encourage the growth of wild flowers for pollination and feed for the wild birds and butterflies, and clover which naturally puts nitrogen back into the soil. In an effort to move us towards becoming a greener business we now recycle all our cardboard, bottles, paper and cooking oil.
